Working closely alongside the art team, I played an important role in shaping the five unique biomes available for players to explore. My responsibilities include creating comprehensive design sheets that detailed the specific props, lighting arrangements and diverse array of creatures unique to each environment. Environment artists used these design sheets as reference while they worked on each biome. Throughout development, I maintained regular communication with environment artists to ensure that each biome aligned with their design. I came up with additional props that we could use for specific biomes to make them feel more lived in. For example, I thought of including various cobweb props throughout the sectors of each biome that are inhabited by spiders. As players traverse these mines, they get an idea of what type of creatures they might run into along the way. Our collaborative efforts aimed to deliver visually stunning and thematically rich biomes that captivate players as they journey through each of them.
Early in development, players had to restart from the beginning of the game regardless of what biome or sector they were able to reach. In order to reduce repetition and increase replayability, I designed the biome and sector select options made available to players whenever they start a new game session, including at startup and after dying in-game. Players were then able to unlock biomes as they completed them and select sectors within those biomes to resume from. Additionally, I came up with a difficulty scale of each biomes’ sectors. As players increase their skills and unlock new biomes, the level of difficulty displayed beneath each sector in the UI updates to a more appropriate rating. I documented my design and created UI wireframes and mockups for players’ biome and sector select options. I worked with our UI artist to finalize designs and implement them into the game.
